What is Sajdah Tilawah?

Sajdah Tilawah refers to a prostration made upon the recitation or listening of specific verses that carry the instruction or implication of prostration. It can be done during prayer (salah) or even outside of prayer. The action is a physical demonstration of obedience and humility before Allah.

When and How to Perform Sajdah Tilawah?

  • If you’re reciting a verse of Sajdah, you should perform a single prostration immediately after or at an appropriate time.

  • If you’re listening, it’s recommended to do the same upon hearing the verse.

  • The sajdah can be done with or without wudu if not in formal prayer, but it’s better to be in a state of cleanliness and face the Qiblah.

  • A short takbir (saying “Allahu Akbar”) is said before going down, and you may say:

“Subhana Rabbiyal A’la” (Glory is to my Lord, the Most High)

Is Sajdah Tilawah Obligatory?

Most scholars consider Sajdah Tilawah as highly recommended (sunnah mu’akkadah), though some say it’s wajib (obligatory), especially during prayer. If missed, there’s no sin, but it’s highly meritorious to perform it. Explore Ehidayat
