7 Pillars of Islam – Roots & Branches in Shia Belief
Roots of Islam (Usul al-Din)
- Tawheed – Belief in the oneness of Allah.
- Adl – Justice of Allah.
- Nabuwaat (Prophethood) – Allah sent Prophets to guide mankind. Prophets were all infallible. Allah does not appoint leaders who sin to represent the Word of Allah.
- Imamat – Belief not only in the virtues of the 12 Imams, but it is also an Islamic commandment that all of mankind must pledge allegiance to these 12 Imams. Imams are also infallible. Everyone who also calls themselves a “Muslim” is also obliged to accept these 12 as the Leaders of Allah. Shias believe that as long as a person believes in Allah and the Messenger of Allah, they are a Muslim. However, the faith of a Muslim is considered incomplete without the recognition of the 12 Imams.
- Belief in the Day of Judgment.
